  1. Marvellous thinking from Sir Richard

    Very technically doable. The Chinese have already shown that this is true. They have got control of their population to the point that dispensing loo paper in public loos is dependent on your personal ID.

    However, the question we teach on “Ethics for Engineers” courses isn’t just “Can We” but also “Should We”

    Will all this surveillance apply to not only to the search for people who might want to blow us up but also to people whose political views might disagree with with the Gang of Three?

    We know that facial recognition is not 100% accurate and all this video is open to the creation of Deep Fakes.

    Sharing the product with other countries opens up enormous opportunities for blackmail and coercion.

    Accessing people’s computer without their knowledge allows the possibility of vile pornography being downloaded surreptitiously to their hard disk. Explaining it to the magistrate will be met with scant sympathy.

    The camera feeds from both outside and inside London brothels offer bottomless opportunity for hostile powers.

    This is what the GDPR conditions about data protection are all about.

    When I lived in Dusseldorf, I used to take visitors to see Gestapo Hq Museum. The Germans keep it along with their Gedaechniskirche as a reminder of what not to do. If you visit you can examine the files they kept on the citizens (a forerunner of the Stasi files) you understand what people will want to do. The Stolpersteine in the pavements are little memorials to people who got dragged away.
