On Wednesday 4th February, we were delighted to welcome to GSF, Andrew Gilmour CMG, Political Director, UN Secretary-General’s Office (2012-2016); UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights (2016-2019); Executive Director of the Berghof Foundation (2020-2025); Author of ‘The Burning Question: Climate and Conflict – Why Does It Matter?’ (2024). He gave us his views on ‘Is It Possible To Have A Principled Foreign Policy In The Era Of Trump?’, in an event chaired by the Rt Hon Nick Hurd.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

ANDREW GILMOUR CMG spent 30 years with the UN, often in conflict areas. He was the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, political director in the Secretary-General’s Office, and many positions in field operations.  From 2020-25, he was the Executive Director of the Berghof Foundation in Berlin, Germany’s oldest and largest organisation working on conflict. He is the author of The Burning Question: Climate and Conflict – Why Does It Matter?  (2024). He was made Visiting Fellow of All Souls, Oxford, and Senior Fellow of SOAS.  His writings on foreign policy, human rights and climate change have been published widely.
