Events

Unless otherwise stated, our events are open to all and take place at The National Liberal Club (David Lloyd George Room), Whitehall Place, London SW1A 2HE. Details of our forthcoming events can be found below.

Our lectures and debates take place between 13:00 - 14:00, with doors opening for lunch at 12:30.

Many of our events are over-subscribed and registered members of Global Strategy Forum are given priority. Registration is quick and free - simply click on the 'Register' button on the left-hand menu.

The July Lecture

Monday 13th July 2009 (12.30-2.30pm)

The Rt Hon the Lord Patten of Barnes CH will be our guest lecturer in July, speaking on the following topic: 'Does the 21st Century belong to China?'

The July Debate

Tuesday 14th July 2009 (12.15-2.15pm)

GSF will be holding a roundtable on the use of torture and enhanced interrogation techniques in intelligence-gathering, which will cover, amongst other things, whether these techniques have any place in a democracy or whether they undermine the societies and governments which their use was intended to protect. Ambassador Tom Pickering, Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the State Department from 1997-2001, will be our Guest of Honour. He will be joined by the Rt Hon Michael Howard QC MP, former leader of the Conservative Party, in a discussion entitled: 'Can the use of torture ever be justified?' This event will be chaired by Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP.

The October Lecture

Tuesday 27th October 2009 (12:30-2:30pm)

Dr Ali Allawi will be our guest lecturer in October. He will be speaking on the topic of his recently-published book, 'The Crisis of Islamic Civilisation'.

The November Lecture I

Monday 9th November 2009

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Rt Hon Lord Hurd of Westwell CH, CBE, PC, Foreign Secretary at the time, will be giving a lecture on the effects that this has had in shaping international affairs subsequently - title to be confirmed.

The November Lecture II

Monday 16th November 2009 (12.30-2.30pm)

Mr F W De Klerk, State President of South Africa from 1989-1994, will be our second guest lecturer in November.
